Foreign Language Classes

While jogging in the park last evening, I overheard someone talking in a really interesting language. Singlish. Actually I can't tell. It might be in Hokkien or Cantonese, spoken in a really fast mode. Then again they might be martians. I am not sure.

So I was thinking that I can do with a little foreign language class. I ran home, source around and even asked my Zookeeper about certain verbs and vocabulary commonly used on this island.

So here we go:

Toa Kang:
literally means big hole. It is used to describe monetary generosity. I supposed it is like the hole in your pocket is so huge that money keeps falling out and you are not disturbed by it.
Eg: Doctors and lawyers are not the most Toa Kang tippers in the entire world.

Yao Gui:
literally means hungry ghosts. Can be used as a verb or a noun to describe greed. Like the ghosts are starved till they become so greedy that the next time you are serving them food they will go all out to snatch. Eg: Mimi is so Yao Gui, she actually queue up for free tissue so that she never has to buy them.

Balak Kampung:
literally going back to kampung. It is very commonly used on my sunny island at the end of the day when people are rushing to beat the crowd to go home. Which puzzled me of course, because there is absolutely no kampung left on this small surface. Eg: Sorry, I can't help you with the paperwork because it is 20 min to balak kampung. At the same time I could be powdering my nose.

Chi ko pek:
No one seems to know what chi ko means, but pek prefers to an old man. So it is used to prefer to dirty old man. But, the phrase is not limited to just old man, young man, smart man, stupid man can also be known as chi ko pek. Eg: Overheard a girl on the top bar saying, that chi ko pek has been staring up my mini skirt the whole night. Damn.

More will follow some other time when I update my foreign reserves bank. In the mean time, the above words taught can be used widely in your daily life.

Remember, practise makes perfect.
